Willie and I are looking into ways to make recycling more fun/rewarding for people, so that they'll do it more and it will be come a bright spot in their day. We're also looking to make mundane tasks fun and engaging at an individual and possibly group level. Our plan is to build a recycling can with a the basketball hoop we always pretend exists, but is never there to reward us. The can would provide auditory and potentially visual feedback as a reward for users "making a basket". We are exploring the use of motion sensing to detect when an object passes into the can, and possibly a form of pressure or impact sensing for the "backboard". Right now, the concept uses this "backboard" as a target and input for a point system that would be displayed above the can. Users would be encouraged to beat high scores and compete against peers and co-workers.
SENSORS:
motion (multiple placements perhaps)
we are looking into using an ultra sonic motion sensor that we found online: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/639
OR a general motion detection sensor
pressure/impact
for this we are looking at using a Force Sensitive resistor as found here:

OUTPUTS:
auditory
visual -- display
light
